Police Department Volunteers

The Payson Police Department is seeking community minded individuals to volunteer their time and skill. Volunteers are used to augment the police force by offering services that are wanted or needed by citizens that officers do not have the time to provide.

Possible services volunteers might provide include data entry, clerical work, telephone answering, traffic control during special events, crime scene security and much more.

The year 2012 was another busy year for the Payson Police Department Volunteers in Policing Program. Forty-two committed local citizens are currently listed on our roster, contributed a total of over 9100 hours of their time to our police department and to the residents of this community during 2012. Several volunteers reached contribution milestones ranging from 7,000 to 10,000 hours. You realize just how amazing those numbers are when it is put in the prospective of an employer paying $10.00 dollars per hour to an employee for 9100 hours. The wage cost alone (not counting other employee contributions) is $96,000 dollars. You can now imagine just how grateful we are for our volunteers, who since the start of the volunteer program, have donated over 129,000 total hours.

One of the most successful programs with the Volunteers continues to be the Guardian Angel program. This program is for citizens that want extra peace of mind. This strictly Volunteer program equips citizens with a pendant that is worn 24/7. In case of an emergency, the button on the pendant is pushed to alert a neighbor or relative that assistance is needed. There are over 400 pendants in use and are provided at no cost.

Another free program for citizens is the PATH program. (Police Access to the Homebound.) In this program, volunteers call the elderly and homebound citizens 7 days a week to check on their welfare. For many citizens, this is the only contact they have with someone.

There are volunteers in every department within the Payson Police Department. Without the volunteers, many programs and services would not exist. The list of duties the volunteers assist in keeps growing every year.

Volunteers will be required to submit an application and are subject to an interview and background check. All applicants must be 18 unless they need to provide a community service to obtain credits for high school graduation.
